So yesterday Shakesville’s Question of the Day was kinda osm: “When they make a major motion picture about your life, what song (or songs) are going to be in the soundtrack?”

When I sat down and really thought about it, I wound up with something akin to the Grosse Pointe Blank soundtrack – not so much that it’s full of the late eighties/early nineties, but that it’s a really long list.

The worst part has been trying to organize it – by decade? Can’t do it – I’ve listened to a lot these songs across multiple ages, coming back to them again and again like touchstones.

Then there’s the question of whether or not these songs are good soundtrack material – I mean, they don’t necessarily send a message about the moment, more they have been the background for moments. Is that how this is supposed to work?

It’s a messy little list – everything from old soft rock to nu wave, through the college years to riot grrl, and out again. It hardly makes sense to me, looking at it if I try to categorize. Lately I’ve been listening the hell out of Krishna Das, the Morrowind soundtrack, and the score to Serenity, as you know if you’ve been playing along at home. None of that makes sense either, really. And after spending a bunch of time on iTunes to match titles with music, that may change abruptly in the next week too. Welcome to my whimsy =)

So anyway – the list! the score! the soundtrack!
